Digital Gold Purchases Jump 83% to Rs 2,590 Crore in September

Digital gold buying in India is growing fast. In September, purchases rose 83% to Rs 2,590 crore. That is a big jump, and it shows that more Indian investors are turning to gold in digital form.

The data comes from the World Gold Council (WGC). The WGC tracks gold demand across the country and around the world. Its latest numbers show that digital gold is no longer a small niche. It is becoming a mainstream way to own gold.

What the September Numbers Show

September purchases were up 4% compared with August. The total volume touched 1.7 tonnes. That is 18% higher than the long-term monthly average. In simple terms, September was a strong month, and it was stronger than a normal month for digital gold.

The 83% growth figure refers to the value of purchases in rupees. The rise in volume was smaller. This gap matters. It suggests that gold prices were higher this year, so buyers spent more money for each gram they bought. Even so, the volume growth shows that demand is real and not just a price effect.

A Strong Nine-Month Run

The September surge is part of a larger trend. From January to September, digital gold purchases climbed 76% to 16.3 tonnes. In the same period last year, buyers purchased 9.2 tonnes. That is a huge increase in less than a year.

This steady growth tells us something important. The demand is not driven by one good month or a festival spike. It has been building through the year. More people are trying digital gold, and many of them are coming back to buy more.

Why Are Investors Buying Digital Gold?

Digital gold is easy to buy. You can purchase it through apps and online platforms. You can start with a small amount, sometimes as little as a few rupees. There is no need to visit a jewellery store or arrange for safe storage.

Physical gold has some problems. You have to store it safely. You may worry about theft. You may also pay making charges when you buy jewellery. Digital gold avoids many of these issues. The gold is held in vaults on your behalf, and you can buy or sell it with a few taps on your phone.

Another reason is convenience. Young investors and first-time buyers often find digital gold less intimidating than other forms of gold investment. They can track prices, set up small regular purchases, and build a gold holding over time.

What This Means for Investors

The strong numbers show that gold remains a popular choice for saving and hedging. Gold is often seen as a safe asset in uncertain times. When stock markets are volatile or inflation is a concern, many investors move some money into gold.

Digital gold makes this easier for small investors. But buyers should still be careful. They should check the platform they use, understand the storage and redemption rules, and know how the gold is backed. It is also wise to treat digital gold as one part of a diversified portfolio, not the whole plan.

The Bigger Picture

The WGC data points to a clear shift. Indians have always loved gold. Now they are finding new ways to own it. Digital platforms are bringing gold within reach of people who may not have bought it before.

If the current pace continues, 2024 could end with digital gold purchases far above last year’s levels. For now, the September numbers and the nine-month trend both send the same message. Digital gold is growing quickly, and investors are paying attention.
