Jefferies Sees Big Upside for Vodafone Idea Shares in Bull Case
Global brokerage firm Jefferies has shared a bold view on Vodafone Idea, the Indian telecom operator that has struggled for years with debt and falling subscribers. In its latest note, Jefferies said the stock could rise as much as 143% in a best-case scenario. At the same time, the brokerage warned that the shares could fall about 25% in a worst-case scenario. This wide range shows how uncertain the future of Vodafone Idea still is.
The note has caught the attention of retail and institutional investors alike. Vodafone Idea has been one of the weakest performers in the Indian telecom space. Its two big rivals, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, have gained market share and stayed profitable. Yet Jefferies believes there is a path for Vodafone Idea to recover strongly if a few key things go right.
Why Jefferies Is Upbeat on Vodafone Idea
The brokerage gave three main reasons for its positive view. Each one is tied to how the company manages its business over the next few quarters.
1. Network Expansion
Vodafone Idea has been investing in its 4G and 5G networks after raising fresh capital. A better network means fewer dropped calls, faster data speeds and a better experience for customers. Jefferies expects this spending to help the company keep existing users and win back some who left for rivals. A stronger network is the base for everything else. Without it, no telecom company can grow.
2. Improving Subscriber Trends
For years, Vodafone Idea lost millions of subscribers every quarter. That trend now appears to be slowing. Jefferies noted that subscriber numbers are showing signs of improvement. If the company can stop the losses and start adding users again, its revenue will rise. More users also mean more money from data plans and value-added services.
3. Tariff Hikes
All three private telecom players have raised prices in recent years. Jefferies expects more tariff hikes in the future. Even a small increase in mobile bills can boost revenue sharply because telecom is a high-volume business. For Vodafone Idea, which has thin margins, a price hike could lift earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in a big way. Higher EBITDA would help the company service its heavy debt and fund more network investment.
What the Bull and Bear Cases Mean
The 143% upside in the bull case assumes that network expansion goes smoothly, subscribers return and tariff hikes flow through to revenue. In that scenario, revenue and EBITDA would grow strongly, and the stock would re-rate. The 25% downside in the bear case reflects the risk that these plans fail. If the company keeps losing users or if debt pressures grow, the stock could fall.
This wide risk-reward range is a reminder that Vodafone Idea is not a stable, low-risk stock. It is a turnaround story. Turnarounds can deliver huge returns, but they can also disappoint.
What Investors Should Watch
Investors should track a few simple signals. First, watch the quarterly subscriber numbers. Steady additions would confirm the improving trend. Second, look at capital spending on networks. Third, keep an eye on any announcements about tariff changes. Finally, watch the company’s debt levels and cash position. These factors will decide whether the bull case or the bear case plays out.
Jefferies has not promised a smooth ride. Its note simply lays out the possibilities. For long-term investors, the key question is whether Vodafone Idea can execute its plan in a market dominated by two strong rivals. The answer will shape the stock for years to come.
