A significant geomagnetic storm is forecast to bring the Northern Lights much farther south than usual this week. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued an alert predicting auroral activity visible across approximately 20 states in the continental United States.

This expansion is what brings the possibility of sightings deep into the United States.

When and Where to Look for the Aurora

The best viewing window is typically from late evening through the early morning hours, with peak activity often around local midnight. The further north an observer is located within the forecast zone, the better their chances. Ideal viewing requires getting away from city light pollution and finding a clear, dark sky with an unobstructed view to the north.

States that could potentially see the lights include those along the northern tier, such as Washington, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New York. Under a strong Kp 4 event, the visibility may extend further south to include parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and even northern California, Colorado, and Kansas. Viewers are advised to check real-time aurora forecast maps for the most accurate and up-to-date predictions.
