CDSL Q2 Results: Net Profit Jumps 24% to Rs 173 Crore as Demat Accounts Surge

Central Depository Services Limited, better known as CDSL, has reported strong growth for the second quarter of the current financial year. The company’s net profit rose 24% year-on-year to Rs 173 crore. Revenue also grew at a similar pace, climbing 23.7% to Rs 395 crore. The results show that India’s growing interest in the stock market is directly boosting the business of the country’s depositories.

What the Numbers Say

The headline figure is the net profit of Rs 173 crore, which is 24% higher than the same quarter last year. Revenue of Rs 395 crore grew almost in line with profit, which suggests the company is growing without letting costs rise too fast. The EBITDA margin expanded to 58%. EBITDA is a measure of operating profit before interest, tax and depreciation. A margin of 58% means that for every Rs 100 of revenue, CDSL kept Rs 58 as operating profit. That is a very healthy margin and shows the strength of its business model.

Why CDSL’s Business Is Booming

CDSL is one of India’s two main depositories. A depository holds shares and other securities in electronic form on behalf of investors. When you open a demat account with a broker, that account is linked to a depository like CDSL. Every time an investor buys or sells shares, the depository records the change in ownership. CDSL earns fees from these services, from account maintenance, and from other related activities.

The company opened around 75 lakh new demat accounts during the quarter. That works out to roughly 8 lakh new accounts every month, or more than 25,000 every day. This shows that a large number of new investors, many of them young and first-time participants, are entering the stock market. Each new account adds to CDSL’s future revenue stream.

Assets Under Custody Cross Rs 89 Lakh Crore

Assets under custody, or AUC, is the total value of securities held by CDSL on behalf of investors. This figure has now crossed Rs 89 lakh crore. To put that in context, it is a massive pool of wealth. AUC grows for two reasons. First, more shares are deposited as new accounts are opened. Second, the market value of existing holdings rises when share prices go up. Both factors have been working in CDSL’s favour.

Background: The Demat Revolution in India

India has seen a huge rise in retail participation in the stock market over the last few years. Easy online account opening, low-cost brokers, smartphone apps and strong market returns have pulled millions of ordinary people into investing. The total number of demat accounts in the country has crossed well over 10 crore. CDSL, along with its rival NSDL, sits at the centre of this system. As the number of investors grows, so does the volume of transactions the depositories must process.

What This Means for Investors

For shareholders of CDSL, the results point to a business that benefits directly from market growth. However, investors should keep a few things in mind. Depository earnings are linked to market activity. In months when trading is heavy and many new accounts are opened, revenue rises. In quiet or falling markets, growth can slow down. The 58% margin is impressive, but it may face pressure if the company invests more in technology and systems to handle rising volumes.

The bigger picture is that CDSL’s results are a mirror of India’s retail investing trend. As long as new investors keep joining the market and asset values stay healthy, the company’s core business should remain strong. The Q2 numbers suggest that this trend is still very much alive.
