L&T Shares Rally 6% After Strong Q2 Profit Growth
Shares of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) jumped about 6% on Wednesday. The rally came after the engineering and construction giant reported a strong set of results for the second quarter of FY27. Investors reacted positively to the big jump in net profit, even as one major brokerage trimmed its target price on the stock.
What the Q2 Numbers Showed
L&T reported a 33% year-on-year rise in net profit to Rs 5,202 crore for the September quarter. That is a sharp increase compared with the same period last year. A profit growth of this size usually signals that the company’s core business is executing well and that order books are converting into revenue.
For a company of L&T’s size, a one-third jump in profit is a meaningful move. It suggests healthy demand across its key segments, which include infrastructure, energy, defence and technology services. The market read the numbers as a sign that the company’s order pipeline remains strong.
Why the Stock Moved Up So Sharply
A 6% single-day gain is large for a heavyweight stock like L&T. Such moves usually happen when results beat what the market had priced in. In this case, the profit growth appears to have surprised investors on the upside.
Large-cap industrial stocks often trade in a narrow range. When a company like L&T delivers profit growth well above expectations, it can trigger fresh buying from both institutional and retail investors. That buying pressure is what pushed the stock higher on Wednesday.
The Jefferies View: Buy, But Lower Target
Global brokerage Jefferies kept its Buy rating on L&T. However, it cut its target price to Rs 4,700. This may look confusing at first. Why would a broker stay positive on a stock but lower its price target?
The answer lies in the details of the results. Jefferies pointed to weaker-than-expected margins. Profit grew strongly, but the quality of that profit mattered to analysts. Margins show how much the company keeps from each rupee of revenue. If margins come in below expectations, it can mean costs are rising or that the mix of projects is less profitable.
Because of this, Jefferies lowered its earnings estimates for future periods. A target price is based on those forward estimates. So even with a Buy rating, a cut in estimates naturally pulls the target price down.
Why Margins Matter for Investors
Revenue growth gets attention, but margins often decide how the stock performs over time. A company can grow sales quickly and still disappoint if margins shrink. For construction and engineering firms, margins depend on project execution, input costs and the type of contracts they win.
If L&T wins more low-margin projects, profit growth may slow even if revenue stays strong. That is why analysts watch margins closely. Jefferies’ note is a reminder that strong headline profit growth does not always tell the full story.
What This Means for Investors
The mixed signals are typical of quarterly earnings season. The stock rallied on strong profit growth, while a top brokerage flagged margin pressure. Both reactions can be right at the same time.
For long-term investors, the key question is whether L&T can keep growing profits while protecting margins. The company’s order book and execution record will matter more than any single quarter. The 6% rally shows the market is still confident about the business. The target price cut shows that analysts want to see better margins before getting more bullish.
Investors should watch the next few quarters for signs of margin recovery. If margins improve, the gap between the stock price and Jefferies’ target may close quickly. If margins stay weak, the stock could face pressure even with strong profit growth.
