Gold and Silver Prices Fall on MCX Ahead of Diwali as Rate Hike Worries Linger

Gold and silver prices dropped sharply on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) in recent trading. Gold fell by about Rs 1,400 per 10 grams. Silver tumbled by around Rs 4,300 per kilogram. The fall came just ahead of Diwali, a time when demand for the metals usually rises. Instead, the market faced pressure from rising oil prices and fresh worries about inflation.

The decline surprised many retail buyers who expected prices to stay firm during the festive season. But global forces were stronger than local demand. Investors were watching two big events closely: the US midterm elections and the US Federal Reserve’s next move on interest rates.

Why Did Gold and Silver Fall?

Several factors worked together to pull precious metal prices down.

Rising Oil Prices

Oil prices climbed higher during this period. When oil becomes more expensive, it pushes up transport and production costs. This feeds into inflation. Rising inflation usually supports gold, but this time the effect worked differently. Higher oil prices made investors nervous about inflation staying high. That, in turn, made them expect the Fed to keep raising interest rates.

Rate Hike Expectations

This is the key point. Gold pays no interest. When interest rates rise, bonds and bank deposits offer better returns. So investors move money away from gold and into interest-paying assets. The stronger the expectation of rate hikes, the more pressure gold faces. Silver, which often follows gold, fell even harder.

US Midterm Elections

Markets were also tracking the US midterm elections. The results could change the political balance in Washington. That affects spending plans, tax policy and the dollar. A stronger dollar usually makes gold more expensive for buyers in other countries, which reduces demand. Investors stayed cautious and held back from big bets on bullion.

What This Means for Diwali Buyers

Diwali is one of the biggest gold-buying seasons in India. Weddings and festivals drive strong demand for jewellery and coins. A price drop of Rs 1,400 per 10 grams can make a real difference for families planning purchases.

For example, a buyer purchasing 50 grams of gold would save about Rs 7,000 compared to the earlier price. That is a meaningful amount for middle-class households. Silver buyers also benefit, since a Rs 4,300 per kg fall lowers the cost of silver coins, gifts and utensils.

But experts warn that prices may stay volatile. The market is reacting to news headlines almost daily. A sudden shift in rate expectations or election results could move prices again within hours.

Key Trading Levels to Watch

Market experts have flagged important support and resistance levels for both metals. Support levels are price points where buying usually picks up. Resistance levels are points where selling tends to increase. Traders are watching these zones closely because a break below support could trigger more selling. A move above resistance could signal a rebound.

For ordinary investors, these levels matter less than the long-term trend. Gold and silver remain popular as a hedge against uncertainty. But short-term swings can be sharp.

What Should You Do Now?

Here are some simple points to keep in mind.

Buy in small parts. Instead of buying all at once, spread purchases over a few weeks. This protects you if prices fall further.

Focus on your goal. If you are buying for a wedding or festival, the current dip is a reasonable window. If you are investing, think long term.

Watch the Fed. Any signal of slower rate hikes could lift gold prices. Any sign of faster hikes could push them lower.

Avoid panic. Volatility is normal in precious metals. Sudden drops are often followed by recoveries.

The coming weeks will be crucial. With Diwali demand on one side and global rate worries on the other, gold and silver prices may continue to swing. Buyers should stay informed and act with a clear plan.
