NTPC Q2 Results: Net Profit Rises 14% to Rs 5,320 Crore as Revenue Jumps 17%

NTPC, India’s largest power producer, has reported a strong set of numbers for the second quarter of the current financial year. The company’s standalone net profit rose 14% year-on-year to Rs 5,320 crore. Revenue from operations grew 16.8% compared with the same quarter last year. The results show that the state-run power giant is growing both its earnings and its sales at a healthy pace.

The term “standalone” means the numbers cover NTPC’s own core business. They do not include the results of its subsidiaries and joint ventures. Investors often look at standalone figures first because they give a clean picture of how the main power generation business is doing.

What Drove the Growth

NTPC runs a large fleet of coal-based, gas-based and renewable power plants across India. Its revenue comes mainly from selling electricity to state distribution companies and other buyers. When power demand rises, the company generates and sells more units, which lifts revenue.

A 17% jump in revenue is a big move for a company of NTPC’s size. It suggests higher electricity generation and strong demand during the quarter. India’s power demand has been climbing steadily, driven by industry, data centres, air conditioning and a growing economy. As the country’s biggest supplier, NTPC sits at the centre of this trend.

Profit grew at a slower pace than revenue. That is common when costs also rise. Fuel costs, employee expenses and depreciation can eat into margins. Even so, a 14% rise in net profit is a solid outcome and shows the company kept its costs under control.

Interim Dividend of Rs 3 Per Share

Along with the results, NTPC announced an interim dividend of Rs 3 per share. A dividend is a cash payout to shareholders from the company’s profits. An “interim” dividend is paid during the year, before the final results are declared.

For income-focused investors, this is welcome news. NTPC is known for paying regular dividends, and it is a key reason many long-term investors hold the stock. A steady payout also signals that the company is confident about its cash position.

Betting Big on Pumped Storage

NTPC is also increasing its capital expenditure on pumped storage projects. Capital expenditure, or capex, is money spent on building new assets such as plants and equipment.

Pumped storage is a type of hydropower that works like a giant battery. When electricity demand is low, the plant uses spare power to pump water up to a higher reservoir. When demand peaks, the water flows back down through turbines to generate electricity. This helps balance the grid, especially as more solar and wind power comes online. Solar power only works in the daytime, and wind is not always steady. Pumped storage can store extra energy and release it when needed.

This move fits NTPC’s wider plan to grow its clean energy footprint. The company has set ambitious targets for renewable capacity and is adding hydro and storage projects alongside its traditional plants.

What This Means for Investors

The quarter shows a company that is still growing its core business while investing for the future. Rising revenue, steady profit growth and a dividend payout together make a balanced picture. The higher capex on pumped storage is a long-term bet. It may raise spending in the near term, but it could support earnings in the years ahead as India needs more flexible and clean power.

Investors should watch a few things in the coming quarters. These include power demand trends, fuel costs, progress on renewable and storage projects, and how the company funds its expansion. For now, the Q2 numbers point to a stable and expanding business.
