UAE Plans Third Crude Oil Pipeline to Avoid the Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates is planning to build a third crude oil export pipeline. The goal is simple: move more oil without depending on the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway is one of the most important oil routes in the world. It is also one of the most risky.

The new pipeline would run from the western coast of the UAE to the port of Fujairah on the eastern side. Abu Dhabi National Oil Co., the country’s state oil company, is studying the project. The pipeline could also be used by third parties, which would make the whole system more efficient.

Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz sits between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It is a narrow channel, only about 21 miles wide at its narrowest point. Despite its small size, it is the world’s most important oil chokepoint.

Roughly one-fifth of global oil consumption passes through the strait every day. That includes oil from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. If the strait were ever closed, even for a short time, oil prices would likely jump sharply around the world.

This is not a theoretical worry. Tensions between the United States and Iran have repeatedly raised fears about the strait. Iran has threatened in the past to block the waterway. Ships have been attacked near the region. Military drills and political disputes have made traders nervous many times over the years.

How the UAE Has Prepared Before

The UAE has already taken steps to reduce this risk. It built the Habshan-Fujairah pipeline, which started operating in 2012. That pipeline can carry about 1.5 million barrels of oil per day to Fujairah, bypassing the strait entirely.

Fujairah is valuable because it sits outside the Persian Gulf. Oil loaded there can reach global markets without passing through Hormuz. The port also has large storage facilities and a growing role as a trading hub.

A second pipeline project has also been discussed in recent years. Now a third line is under consideration. Together, these projects would give the UAE much more flexibility. If one route is blocked or disrupted, others can keep oil flowing.

What the New Pipeline Would Do

The planned pipeline would connect the western coast to Fujairah. This would add another export route and increase total capacity. It would also let the UAE pump more oil when global demand is strong.

The idea that third parties could use the pipeline is important. Other producers in the region might pay to send their oil through it. That would spread the cost and make the pipeline more useful. It would also strengthen Fujairah’s position as a major energy port.

Why This Matters for Investors

For oil investors, pipeline news like this is about risk. When a major producer can avoid a chokepoint, global oil supply becomes a little safer. That can reduce the chance of sudden price spikes caused by political tension.

It also matters for the UAE’s long-term plans. The country wants to raise its oil production capacity. More export routes mean it can sell more oil without being limited by the strait.

Investors should watch for official announcements from Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. Details like cost, timeline and capacity are not yet clear. But the direction is clear. The UAE is steadily building ways to keep its oil moving, even when the region is tense.
